Every year, the Richmond Foundation raises money to support staff at our school. Last year (2005-2006 school year) through parent pledges, we raised over $20,000. Other funding sources for staff included the school auction, grants, a business pledge drive and other sources. The fundraising for staff for 2005-2006 school year was $74,000 was used to save our librarian and reading specialist.
We will again do our Parent Pledge Drive as well as raise money from outside organizations. To get involved or donate, visit the Richmond Foundation page.
Beginning in February, get your morning cup of coffee (or two cups) here at Richmond Elementary and help fund our staff positions for 2008-09.
Our days often start with particularly busy mornings. Getting your coffee at Richmond will sure help fuel the forces that keep you rockin' AND give you a little extra time each morning.
PTA members will be brewing yummy Portland Roasting coffee every morning starting on February 11th. Please come by to fill your travel mug or one of our to-go cups with some delicious coffee in front of the office. We will also provide cream and sugar. One 12 oz. Cup of coffee is only $1 or a $10 coffee card for 11 cups. All profit will go to the Richmond Foundation.
What a combo! Save $$$ while drinking your tasty morning coffee, save an extra trip to the coffee shop and help fund staff for our school!!!

Wonderful kindergarten parent (and Carson's mom) Kim Dody has generously stepped forward to take on the position of box tops coordinator for the year. Kim will be collecting the box tops from the drop areas on the table outside the office as well as inside the office with Patsy. Please cut the box tops on your own at home in order to simplify the process for Kim so she can just send them directly to the company in order for us to begin racking up the points towards new computers, classroom supplies, playground equipment, etc. And remember, this is a program that is offered across the country so ask those grandparents in Florida to cut and send you the box tops. If my 87-year-old grandpa can send in those box tops, anyone can! Thank you Kim!!!
All three Box Tops for Education programs are year-round, so keep participating.

Scrip has long been a favorite school fundraiser: no selling to family and friends, no buying things you wouldn't normally buy - it's like free money for your class! Merchants sell gift certificates or gift cards to us at a discount, families pay face value, and 90% of the proceeds go into your child's class trip account (you can also choose to direct the proceeds to Richmond Foundation or ONK). The remaining 10% goes into the Oya No Kai general fund, which supports the entire program.
For more information, visit the Scrip page on the Oya no Kai Web site.
Good news! Save Our Elms coffee is switching back to the ever popular - and wonderfully priced - pound size bags of coffee!
Even better: Portland Roasting will package our 1 pound of fabulous, freshly roasted coffee in compostable bags! These bags have a corn oil liner and can be composted after removing the small metal tie at the top of the bag. (The previous packaging was nonrecyclable.) Look for the new order form on the Forms and Documents page.
With this bag switch, we will move back to the price from earlier in the school year: one pound bags are $10 for regular coffee and $11 for ground. There will be ground regular coffee on hand for purchase in the office and orders are filled weekly for whole bean and decaf coffee, too. Thank you for supporting this program and for hanging in there as we make this exciting switch to a more earth-friendly package. (Compostable or not, buying coffee in pound size bags versus 12 ounce bags also reduce waste as we buy fewer units to meet our caffeine needs!) Remember it is all for the benefit of our beautiful Dutch Elm trees. For parents new to Richmond, 20 mature Elm trees line our school grounds - about half of the Elms in the Richmond neighborhood. These trees are not only beautiful, but they cool our surroundings, provide habitat to urban wildlife, and help absorb carbon monoxide emissions. Elms are susceptible to Dutch Elm Disease (DED) and many communities - including Portland - have lost the Elm trees lining their streets to this disease. DED is a fungus that is spread by beetles that eat dead Elm wood. Once infected, an Elm will die within weeks and can quickly spread the fungus to neighboring trees.
The Richmond chapter of Save Our Elms fundraises to inoculate the trees every three years with a fungicide to protect them from Dutch Elm Disease (DED). Richmond volunteers Ayana Kotera, Mary Boyer, Jennifer Gregor, Dustin Klinger, Seth Klinger, and John Pozar successfully inoculated the trees in June with a little help from the City of Portland's Urban Forestry Division. Now we begin to fundraise again for 2010. (Fungicide prices vary every year, but we are hoping to have about $4000 in the bank by our next inoculation date.)
To raise money, Save Our Elms has partnered with Portland Roasting to sell coffee. The coffee is delicious, environmentally friendly and costs $9/bag for regular and $10 for decaf. $4.60 from each bag of regular and $5.05 from each bag of decaf goes to Save Our Elms. We accept donations as well.
Portland Roasting descriptions:
All coffees for Richmond are our Farm Friendly(tm) Direct coffees because as important to us as the quality of our coffee is our social responsibility. We strongly believe that we can make a positive difference in the coffee world through direct, socially responsible coffee sourcing. The foundation of this coffee sourcing is our Farm Friendly Direct™ Programs. These Programs involve paying growers a premium for their coffee with 100% of the premium going to farm and community projects. All of these projects are designed to give back directly to the farmers - furthering the long term sustainable infrastructure. These are extremely important issues to Portland Roasting!
A limited selection of ground coffee will be for sale on hand in the school office. Please see Patsy Burke, our helpful secretary, to purchase. She will show you what we have and collect your $10/pound. For your best selection (and essential ground or whole bean preference), I will fill weekly orders. Please put order forms with your checks (made out to SAVE OUR ELMS) in the Save Our Elms mailbox in the school office or contact Mary Klinger at (503) 234-5147. For orders submitted by 8:00 AM Thursday, coffee will be available in the office by Friday afternoon.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!
